Germany shifting away from nuclear power: Merkel (by MarketWatch)
LONDON (MarketWatch) -- The German government will offer a clear timeline for its plan to move the nation's energy policy away from nuclear power, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Thursday, according to Dow Jones Newswires. "We will use the period of the moratorium to speed up the turnaround in energy," Merkel told parliament. "We want to reach the era of renewable energy as fast as possible." Merkel on Tuesday ordered the shutdown of the nation's seven oldest nuclear plants as the government conducts a three-month safety review. Merkel said the exit from nuclear power must be conducted with caution in order to ensure the energy supply and to keep down greenhouse-gas emissions.
