The Port of Halifax’s Q1 (January - March) 2011 containerized cargo continued with its sixth consecutive quarter of growth.

Demand for bulk and general cargo was impacted by a sluggish US economy and other global economic factors. Despite this, the decline did not outweigh the throughput of containerized cargo which continued to grow at a more traditional single-digit rate as was experienced prior to the economic downturn. Thus, overall quarterly cargo throughput at Halifax declined by only 0.1% (1,491 metric tonnes).

Containerized cargo growth (measured in Twenty-foot Equivalent Units - TEUs) for the first three months of 2011 was up 3.6% over Q1 2010, with total throughput of 103,079 TEUs versus 99,450 TEUs in Q1 2010. Compared to 2009, the port’s Q1 containerized cargo grew by 46.5%.
