Geithner calls for global push against slowdown

Geithner calls for global push against slowdown (by Greg Robb)

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said he would try to generate support for a renewed global effort to combat risks of slower growth at the Group of 20 ministers meeting in Paris that ends Saturday. "We need to see a broader global effort to recognize growth... is much slower than it should be," Geithner said in an interview on CNBC. As part of the new strategy, Europe had to face the "hard part" of designing a more effective and more comprehensive strategy to end the financial crisis. The U.S. should do its part by adopting President Obama's jobs plan, Geithner said. And China should contribute my letting its exchange rate appreciate more rapidly, he said. Geithner said that concerns over the summer that the world might be headed into a new downturn "have receded a bit." But growth is still too slow, he said.
