I also know nothing about commodity options and because futures have the leverage and ability to make quick big profits or quick big losses, I did and would ONLY trade futures. Of course it is the trader and the system-methods that really count?

But in stocks-ETFs. I basicly ONLY trade options. And I mainly only trade short term options.
But if I had too or was going to trade them longer term? I would ONLY trade the deep in the money options! 20% or more in the money!
And the shorter term ones of 2 weeks or less. A little out of the money.
Of course again it still depends on the trader and the system-methods they trade!
You can test and see which strikes and time periods work best with your trading ideas.
Also on the longer term stuff. Maybe do leaps and sell monthlies against them.

Just basicly.
Trade what you see.
Do what you KNOW, and do best! And forget the rest?
